Late last night, insider Darren Dreger reported that all signs point to the Leafs hiring former Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving.
While the news remains unconfirmed by the club, reports emerge that some significant issues are in the way for Treliving to take over as general manager in Toronto. According to Andy Strickland, one huge problem is whether or not Treliving can participate in the draft at the Toronto table next month.
This is quite an important detail to iron out, though I doubt it will prevent the Maple Leafs from finalizing a deal with the former Flames GM today and name him the the 18th GM in club history.
Per Frank Seravalli, the could be wrapped as soon as this afternoon because of “some loose ends to tie up”, which could include what Strickland reported.
Speaking of which, Strickland also mentioned how people close to Treliving indicated that he was the top pick in Toronto from the start of the process only weeks after having made the call to terminate Kyle Dubas.
“Those close to the former Flames GM indicated this was Brad Treliving’s job from the very beginning of the process, as long as he wanted it. Logical hire by the Maple Leafs.”
Let’s see how it wraps out later today.
