Significant issue in Calgary leads to imminent trade!

The NHL is deep in its summer lull, and the Calgary Flames have been among the quietest teams in the league. But as training camp inches closer, there are real reasons to believe that general manager Craig Conroy still has moves left to make.

The most obvious area ripe for a deal, per the Calgary Sun, is the Flames' blue line, where the organization finds itself with a significant logjam. Kevin Bahl, Simon Nemec, Zayne Parekh, and Zach Whitecloud appear positioned to fill the top four spots. Behind them, Yan Kuznetsov established himself as an everyday NHLer last season, while Jake Middleton, Brayden Pachal, Joel Hanley, and Hunter Brzustewicz are all vying for ice time.

That's nine defensemen competing for a limited number of roster spots, and it gives Conroy plenty of chips to play with if he wants to get creative in a late-summer swap.

The forward group is similarly crowded. Rumors surfaced around the NHL Draft in June that Connor Zary could be available on the trade market, suggesting the Flames are open to shaking things up among their wingers as well.

Nobody should expect a flurry of deals in the final weeks of August, but the possibility of one or two transactions before camp opens remains very real.

Adding to the roster calculus is a wave of young prospects expected to turn professional once the upcoming NCAA season wraps up. Conroy needs to carve out roster space for that incoming talent, which makes subtracting a veteran or two even more logical.

That roster math also explains why professional tryout agreements are unlikely to be a significant part of Calgary's plans. Despite notable names like Patrik Laine sitting on the open market, Conroy has never leaned heavily on PTOs, and the current depth chart leaves little room for speculative additions.

Meanwhile, the Flames still have unfinished business on the contract front. Morgan Frost, who is expected to serve as the team's top center this season, is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. While there is no immediate urgency to lock him up before camp, having a No. 1 pivot playing on an expiring deal adds a layer of intrigue to the months ahead. Calgary's salary cap situation is healthy enough to reward him if he performs well, but a big season could also drive his price up considerably.

The health of Jonathan Huberdeau is another storyline hovering over the organization. The team's highest-paid player was shut down in February for hip surgery, and while management has reportedly indicated his recovery is going smoothly, his availability for the start of the season remains unconfirmed.

The clock is ticking until the start of training camp, and the Flames appear to be biding their time. But with a surplus of defensemen, trade-eligible forwards, and a training camp deadline approaching, Conroy's phone could start ringing at any moment.
