Significant update in Jacob Trouba’s chaotic trade situation in NYC

The Rangers are taking a huge risk…

A few weeks ago, reports emerged that the Rangers trying to move captain Jacob Trouba, causing a lot of drama in New York City. Trouba owns a 15-team no-trade clause and he is believed to be working closely with his “aggressive” agent Kurt Overhardt to block a trade from the Rangers, especially since he would prefer to stay put for his wife’s current hospital residency.

At the moment, reporter Vincent Mercogliano does not see the Blue Shirts making any major moves this summer after all, after waiving Barclay Goodrow, acquring Reilly Smith from the Pittsburgh Penguins and signing Sam Carrick. The Rangers will have access to a second contract buyout once Ryan Lindgren’s arbitration situation is resolved, though they will still be able to afford Trouba’s $8 million salary cap hit, and they’re not expected to make use of it.
Mercogliano believes the Rangers will attempt to keep Trouba on the roster despite the awkward fallout from general manager Chris Drury’s failed attempt to trade him to the Detroit Red Wings. He expects Trouba to start the 2024-25 season in New York City.

“Quite frankly, the Rangers don’t have many other places to turn. Even if they traded Trouba today, who would replace him in their lineup? The next right-handed defenseman on their depth chart is newly signed Casey Fitzgerald, a 27-year-old with only 63 games of NHL experience.”

Trouba is having a hard time with how he is being treated by his own organization and it will be interesting to see how the Rangers managed the relationship with their captain before the season opener.

Trouba has two years left on his current contract, making $8 million against the cap through the 2025-26 season. Last season he recorded 22 points in 69 games and added another seven points in 16 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
