Patrice Bergeron is the only one that can make the decision. Earlier this week, the veteran forward announced that he would be taking time to evaluate his future with his family, figuring out whether he might have the desire to come back for his 19th NHL season, all of them with the Boston Bruins.
Insider Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic expects that Bergeron will retire. This is how he puts it:
“The 36-year-old is taking time to make up his mind. It aligns with his personality. Bergeron is a careful thinker. When he arrives at his conclusion, that will be that. He is not Tom Brady.
The belief here is that he is confirming to himself what he has believed all along: This is it. Bergeron was named a finalist for the Selke Trophy on Tuesday. He should exit with his record-setting fifth win.
“He needs his space,” [head coach Bruce] Cassidy said. “We all respect that. That’s just the way it is. When he’s ready to have a conversation, then I’m sure he’ll reach out to whoever he needs to. But right now, I think he needs time. It’s a big decision. It’s a big decision. He needs to take all the time he needs.”
Shinzawa believes Bergeron is confirming to himself that it’s time to retire. The decision will definitely impact the Bruins moving forward: I don’t think Bergeron can be replaced. Ever.
When you think about the elite player Bergeron is, especially if he wins the Selke Trophy this year, you also remember his courage and determination.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he returns as well. Let’s hope Shinzawa is wrong…
