This isn't what we wanted to hear.

The good news is that young Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson has looked every bit like he belongs in the National Hockey League through his first two games, skating with the poise of a veteran and demonstrating that he has the tools that Detroit was envisioning when they made him their 1st overall draft selection in the 2021 NHL Draft.

The bad news is that he's already dealing with his first injury at the NHL level. During last night's game at Little Caesars Arena against the Florida Panthers, Edvinsson departed after a hit from Florida's Radko Gudas, but was able to return to action. However, head coach Derek Lalonde explained in his postgame comments afterward that Edvinsson was visiting with team doctors.

“I give him credit for coming back,” Lalonde said of Edvinsson. “He’s got some (discomfort) there. He’s back with the doctors and they’re doing a picture of it now.”

How does Lalonde feel about Edvinsson's play against the Panthers?

“Great. I thought he was our best D tonight," he said. "He created some plays, he gapped, was hard. Some positive growth.”

Right now, Edvinsson's status for tonight's game against the St. Louis Blues has yet to be determined.
