Simon Edvinsson is going to need some dental work after this
Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson felt hard done by on Friday after this call went against him, but he was most definitely the man who walked away with the lighter punishment.
On Friday night Thompson and his Sabres faced off against the Detroit Red Wings and it would be roughly midway through that game's third and final period that things would get a little weird. Thompson was racing to make a play being carried around the boards by Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson and in the blink of an eye Thompson's stick had struck Edvinsson squarely in the mouth.
The blow would leave Edvinsson busted open and also left him with several severely damaged front teeth, knocking serious chunks out of a number of Edvinsson's chiclets. While it was Thompson's stick that slammed into Edvinsson's face however, you can easily argue that it was Edvinsson who caused the damage to himself.
Thompson was merely reaching for the puck when Edvinsson dumped that same puck up the ice, quickly pulling his stick back in tight against his body as he did so. As Edvinsson pulled his stick in however, he grabbed Thompson's stick right along with it and caused it to slam into his own face.
Although he likely won't be making this trade again, Edvinsson did earn his team a big powerplay as a result and could only laugh and smile about what had transpired despite the damage to his face.
