The Detroit Red Wings are in shambles after a shocking decision from their young star defenseman.

The Detroit Red Wings may very well be the most dysfunctional organization in the National Hockey League right now.

On Saturday night, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman dropped a bombshell when he revealed that Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson has had enough and now wants out of Detroit.

"There is word today around the league that unsigned defenseman Simon Edvinsson prefers a trade from the Red Wings," revealed Friedman during Saturday night's NHL broadcast.

The news will be a massive blow to the Red Wings following the trade demand made by their now former captain, Dylan Larkin, earlier this summer, but I suspect the reaction to the Edvinsson news will be very different than the one we have seen so far with Larkin.

Edvinsson has done everything to show his commitment to this organization, including showing up to training camp without a contract in place, but in spite of that he was rewarded with nothing and currently sits at home in Sweden without a contract to start the 2026-27 NHL regular season. Friedman made it clear that it is this exact situation that has led to Edvinsson's frustration.

"Apparently his frustration at the entire situation has led him to indicate he would prefer a trade," confirmed Friedman.

I was convinced that when the Red Wings announced Shawn Horcoff as interim GM on the very same day that 8 year contract extensions remained available under the collective bargaining agreement that the move had been made for the sole purpose of signing Edvinsson to an 8 year deal prior to the deadline expiring at 11:50 pm on September 15th. No such deal ever materialized and even though Edvinsson took a major risk showing up to camp without a contract, he still never got one signed.

I can certainly understand why he's angry and I suspect that many fans in Detroit, many of whom have grown disgruntled with this organization, will understand as well.
