Scary moment for the Flyers and Zegras last night.
Talk about being lucky. On Thursday night, Philadelphia Flyers star forward Trevor Zegras was called for tripping in the third period of the contest against the Ottawa Senators as he took the penalty on Tim Stützle. As he tripped the Sens’ star forward, Zegras fell to the ice and the skate blade of Stützle landed and grazed his wrist leaving him in a very vulnerable position. Fans held their breaths as Zegras look down to see if there was any damage.
Thankfully for the Flyers’ player, there was no cut or blood visible, and he was consequently sent to the penalty box.
Upon a review of the play you can tell how lucky Zegras was to come out without any damage.
The sequence reminded fans of the play in which then-Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane was severely cut by the skate blade of then-Tampa Bay Lightning veteran Pat Maroon.
The gruesome injury severed his median nerve and radial artery on his wrist, required surgery, and sidelined him for several months of action. Kane has since recovered and returned to the ice, and now plays for the Vancouver Canucks.
It could’ve been a nightmare moment for Zegras and the Flyers, but luck was on his side. A few inches deeper, and this story might’ve ended very differently.
