It initially looked like a major disaster for the Detroit Red Wings, but as more and more news continues to filter out of Detroit it's starting to look like the team may have dodged a bullet.
Roughly midway through the second period Red wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall collided with teammate Andreas Athanasiou in front of the Red Wings net as both players attempted to back a play on the puck. The result was Kronwall dropping to the ice in agony, writhing back and forth, and it honestly looked like it was something extremely serious based on his reaction.
However after being treated by Red Wings medical staff it sounds like Kronwall has only suffered a sprain, and it doesn't sound like he's expected to miss significant time. He will miss some time however as Sportsnet's Damien Cox is now reporting that defenseman Xavier Oullete will be called up to replace Kronwall for some time.
As Cox put it however, the Wings are relived the injury was not as bad as it looked.
Wings will likely recall D Xavier Ouellete on Monday to fill for Kronwall. Privately, Wings are relieved it's not much worse.— Damien Cox (@DamoSpin) March 13, 2016
