Even longtime insiders were stunned by what happened immediately after Vegas eliminated Anaheim.
The Vegas Golden Knights are heading to the Western Conference Final after a dominant 5–1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks in Game 6 on Thursday night, but the biggest talking point after the game surprisingly had little to do with the action on the ice.
Vegas now moves on to face the powerhouse Colorado Avalanche, who captured the Presidents’ Trophy before storming through the first two playoff rounds with an 8–1 postseason record, including a five-game elimination of Minnesota. The WCF kicks off on Wednesday night.
Yet despite one of the biggest wins of the season, the atmosphere following the game inside the Golden Knights organization took an unexpected turn.
According to Golden Knights insider Jesse Granger, head coach John Tortorella declined to speak with the media after clinching a trip to the conference final, something Granger admitted he had “never seen” before.
That was only the beginning.
Vegas also reportedly kept its dressing room closed to media access following the victory, another highly unusual move after a series-clinching playoff win. Instead, the organization only made a single player available in a separate room alongside the two standard podium interviews, Mitch Marner and Brett Howden.
And when they sat down, both players immediately stated that they were worried Tortorella and the team bus were going to leave them behind at the arena.
The comments quickly caught attention online because of how unusual the entire situation felt after such a major playoff moment.
The lack of access immediately raised eyebrows around the hockey world, particularly given the magnitude of the win and the emotional nature usually associated with advancing this deep into the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Whether the decision was related to internal celebrations, a team policy choice, or something else entirely remains unclear for now.
What is clear, however, is that the Golden Knights are suddenly becoming one of the NHL’s most intriguing storylines heading into the next round: both on and off the ice.
