The road to the National Hockey League was a difficult one for young Sonny Milano this season, but after some hard work and perseverance he has once again achieved his goal.
On Saturday night, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman broke the news that the Washington Capitals and the aforementioned Milano were closing in on a one year deal, a deal that has now materialized. Friedman has since confirmed that the one year deal is now official, and it will come in at an average annual value and salary cap hit of $750,000 for the 2022-23 season.
Milano was unable to secure himself a contract during the offseason and instead wound up signing a professional tryout offer with the Calgary Flames. In spite of that PTO however the Flames would opt not to offer Milano a contract, putting him in limbo at the start of the regular season.
While Milano will now join the Capitals roster, if the Capitals ever decide to send him down to the American Hockey League they would have to submit him to waivers where he could be claimed by a rival NHL team.
Milano most recently played in the NHL as a member of the Anaheim Ducks, scoring 14 goals and adding 20 assists for a total of 34 points over 66 games played with the Ducks last season. He finished the season with a plus minus rating of -9, and has 10 penalty minutes to his name.
