Late on Tuesday, the Anaheim Ducks announced that their Executive Vice President and General Manager Bob Murray has been placed on administrative leave pending an ongoing investigation related to professional conduct.
This was the statement from the team: “We recently became aware of accusations of improper professional conduct against Bob Murray. After internal review, we enlisted Shephard Mullin to perform an independent investigation. Upon recommendation from their initial findings, we have decided to place Bob on administrative leave pending final results. In the interim, Vice President of Hockey Operations and Assistant General Manager Jeff Solomon will assume the role of Interim General Manager. We will have no further comment until the investigation is complete.”
Surprisingly on social media, reporters and insiders did not seem shock that Murray was at the center of it. Greg Wyshynski of ESPN even commented on the reactions from sources, stating:
"The lack of surprise from sources about Bob Murray being placed on leave and being investigated is … jarring.
“Not in the sense that they knew this was coming, but more about the individual at the center of it.”
Murray has been with the Ducks since 2005, and became GM upon Brian Burke’s exit from the club in 2008. He had previously served as the GM of the Chicago Blackhawks from 1997 to 1999 and also worked with the Vancouver Canucks as a professional scout. Back in 2014, Murray was the recipient of the Jim Gregory Award as the NHL’s general manager of the year.
But that was a long time ago and now the truth seems to be coming out. Good on the Ducks for pulling Murray as soon as they were made aware of the issue and not letting him in charge whilst the investigation takes place.
