With controversy surrounding the NHL's decision to ban their players from participating in the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics, host nation South Korea have put their best foot forward and plan on using the global spectacle as a launching pad for hockey in the nation.

In an article reported by the Korean Herald, President of the Korea Ice Hockey Association Chung Mong-won shared his plans to help develop South Korea into a county with a prominent hockey program.

"After PyeongChang, we'll try to qualify for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing on merit," he said. "We hope to expand our grassroots and generate more interest in the sport," Chung said to the Korean Herald.

This report comes a few days after it was announced that AHL players on two-way contracts would not be eligible to participate in the games.
