Rumors have swirled all summer long about Connor McDavid’s new contract with the Edmonton Oilers as some pundits believe he could sign ahead of the 2025–26 season aiming to avoid distractions. McDavid himself has confirmed he intends to win in Edmonton, while also leaving open the possibility of starting the season without a signed deal.

Amid the speculation, Oilers general manager Stan Bowman spoke candidly about the situation in an interview with The Athletic on Wednesday. He emphasized that McDavid is treated differently because of his unique status in the NHL.

“He’s the best player in the world and, as a result, has earned the right to handle this the way he feels right to handle it… The conversations were really more about the team itself. Like, ‘How are we going to get over the hump?’”

Bowman stressed that the internal perspective within the Oilers organization contrasts with outside chatter. The front office, led by CEO and President of Hockey Operations Jeff Jackson, has maintained ongoing, constructive discussions with McDavid and his agent.

“They’re really all positive and constructive conversations. We’ve had great discussions with Judd, as well, throughout the process this summer. Really just trying to be respectful. Connor is that player who has earned the right not to be forced into anything. It’s on his plate, and when he’s ready, he’s ready,” Bowman said.

While the timing of McDavid’s contract remains uncertain, Bowman’s comments underscore the Oilers’ trust in their captain and focus on long-term success.

The key question for fans and management alike is where McDavid sees the team in two or three years, and whether Edmonton will have shown the captain enough for him to put pen to paper.
