The Hurricanes forward found himself at the center of a heated debate.
A Stanley Cup celebration that should have been one of the happiest moments of Jesperi Kotkaniemi’s career quickly turned into a controversial discussion online.
The Carolina Hurricanes forward shared a photo of himself on his Instagram account with hockey’s most prestigious trophy after the team captured the 2026 Stanley Cup, but the post soon became a lightning rod for criticism.
Kotkaniemi eventually disabled comments on the Instagram post, a move that many fans believe came after a wave of negative reactions directed his way.
And the reason behind the backlash is tied to one simple fact: while Kotkaniemi’s name will be engraved on the Stanley Cup, he did not appear in a single playoff game during Carolina’s championship run.
The 25-year-old forward still qualified to have his name included on the trophy after playing 42 regular-season games for the Hurricanes this season, but some fans immediately questioned whether he deserved to celebrate alongside the team after watching the entire postseason from the sidelines.
For Kotkaniemi, however, this championship is still the result of being part of the organization throughout the season and contributing over the course of an 82-game campaign.
The former third-overall pick has experienced plenty of ups and downs since entering the NHL, including becoming one of hockey’s most talked-about players after leaving the Montreal Canadiens for Carolina in a controversial offer-sheet situation in 2021.
Now, even after reaching the ultimate goal in hockey, Kotkaniemi finds himself at the center of another debate.
A Stanley Cup ring is supposed to be celebrated with everyone who loves the game. But for Kotkaniemi, his championship moment has sparked a conversation that extends far beyond the celebration itself.
