The Stars general manager provided details on his captain's scary injury.
On Wednesday, Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn was held out of practice as a cautionary measure after it was reported that he was out on a day-to-day basis with an upper-body injury.
However on Thursday, the Stars and general manager Jim Nill confirmed that Benn has to undergo surgery for a collapsed lung and will be reevaluated in four weeks.
Benn was diagnosed with the injury late in the third period of Tuesday night’s game against the Minnesota Wild.
Benn, who is entering his 17th season in the NHL, took a pay cut this offseason to remain in Dallas, signing a one-year, $1 million contract with up to $3 million available in performance bonuses.
The Stars are two games into their preseason and losing Benn this earlier in the calendar is a significant blow, especially for the captain, who was looking to bounce back after a difficult season in 2024-25. He took a tough step back in both goals and assists from the year prior, posting 16 goals and 33 assists.
Benn is a valuable depth piece in Dallas and we can only wish him a speedy recovery.
