The Dallas Stars have signed RFA goaltender Jake Oettinger to a three year contract worth $4 million per season.
That's incredible value for Oettinger, who I truly believe is on the verge of becoming one of the best goaltenders in the NHL.
"Jake's performance spoke for itself last season," said GM Jim Nill in a statement on the team's website. "He has elite physical ability and presence in the net, while also exhibiting phenomenal mental strength in high pressure situations. Jake's poise and character off the ice have made him a leader in our locker room. He has shown that he has the skill, work ethic and poise to excel at the NHL level. He was a key part of the team's success last season, and we're excited to see him continue to grow here in Dallas."
The 23 year old Oettinger posted a 2.53 goals against average and .914 save percentage with the Stars last season en route to a 30-15-1 record. It was in the team's seven game series against the Calgary Flames is where Oettinger really shone though. He played absolutely out of his mind in the series, posting a ridiculous 1.81 goals against average and .954 save percentage.
Oettinger will be 26 years old when the contract expires and will still be a restricted free agent, meaning that the Stars are at no risk of him walking away following this new deal. All in all, this is an incredible signing from Stars GM Jim Nill. Well done.
