The GM fails to take much responsibility.
The Detroit Red Wings held their season ending press conference today with GM Steve Yzerman and head coach Todd McLellan addressing the media at Little Caesar's Arena in downtown Detroit.
Yzerman began his media availability saying that essentially the team's players aren't good enough and that they need to acquire better players this offseason.
"We need better players," Yzerman said bluntly.
“The most obvious would be need better players. We need to improve in particular areas, goal scoring, particularly five-on-five,” he said.
NHL insider David Pagnotta was live on Daily Faceoff immediately following Yzerman's news conference and reported that he believes that Yzerman and the Red Wings, "are going to try to make a bit of a splash here this summer."
"They want to address offence," confirmed Pagnotta. "They were pressing hard to bring in a top-six guy. They've got a good pool of assets now that they can take the next steps with, and also package up to bring in some immediate help for this club in order to take that next step."
"They will be aggressive this offseason... They want to bring in more potency to that lineup... They're just not deep enough."
Personally, I feel like Yzerman has swung and missed on just about every opportunity he has had to add "better players" to his lineup. With a big fish in the free agent pond named 'Quinn Hughes' this upcoming offseason, you have to imagine that Yzerman is doing all he can to make a large acquisition. That is... if he's afforded the opportunity.
