Steve Yzerman makes unbelievable comments after the 2025 NHL Draft.
I think it's safe to say we now know which side of the vote Detroit Red Wings' general manager Steve Yzerman was on when the idea of a decentralized draft was first put forward.
After two days of the decentralized draft it seems just about everyone is prepared to throw the idea in the trash bin forever. From National Hockey League executives to the reporters who cover the sport to the fans themselves, everyone seems to agree that the decentralized draft was a horrible mistake... well almost everyone.
In a bizarre twist, Yzerman has come forward and made it clear that he would like things to continue in this fashion. Yzerman informed reporter Sean Shapiro that he actually preferred this year's draft as a result of him being able to enjoy his own office and be in his usual work space while working on the draft for the Red Wings.
Fortunately for the rest of us it sounds like Yzerman won't get his way, with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman against the idea from the very beginning. Bettman only allowed the decentralized draft to come to pass after teams in the league voted 26-6 in favor of the idea, a vote that I suspect would flip the other way if it were held again today.
Minnesota Wild insider Michael Russo was quick to celebrate the fact that Yzerman won't be getting his way moving forward.
While others like Bruins reporter Pete Blackburn of the What Chaos podcast used the opportunity to take a little shot at Yzerman.
While it looks like Yzerman might be alone on an island when it comes to people who actually enjoyed this year's decentralized NHL Draft, it may very well be that he is not alone. I'd love to know what you thought of this year's NHL Draft in the comments.
Update: Capitals GM Chris Patrick also enjoyed this draft with Patrick expressing that it was safer for him to keep his notes out in his home office.
