Craig Berube gives Stolarz the yank after just 25 minutes against the Bruins.
The Toronto Maple Leafs saw the return of goaltender Joseph Woll to the net on Saturday night, and the timing may prove to be fortuitous.
While Woll was backstopping the Toronto Marlies on Saturday night during a conditioning stint after a long layoff from the team, the Maple Leafs were struggling against divisional rivals the Boston Bruins at the very same time. Unfortunately the goaltending situation against the Bruins wasn't great with Maple Leafs starting netminder Anthony Stolarz getting pulled from the net after just roughly 25 minutes of play.
Stolarz would give up 4 goals on 20 shots as the Bruins dominated in terms of shots early on, a save percentage of just .800 over that stretch of play. Stolarz did get a pretty good leash from Berube but after the fourth goal from the Bruins, the first of the second period, Berube made the decision to put backup goaltender Dennis Hildeby into the net in Stolarz's place.
To be fair to Stolarz he did face some pretty good goal scorer's with Morgan Geekie picking up his 11th of the season, tied for the league lead in goals.
David Pastrnak also had a goal after a filthy dangle created a scoring chance for him, a scoring chance that Stolarz himself appeared to put into the net.
I suspect that Stolarz losing track of the puck, and appearing to knock it into his own net, was the last straw for Berube who made the decision at that point to pull his goaltender out of the net.
Here is a look at Stolarz leaving the game:
The Leafs play again on Sunday and this may have been a decision on Berube's part to save Stolarz for that game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
