NHL insider confirms the Oilers are still looking to make a goalie trade.
The Edmonton Oilers are coming off of a strong performance against the Seattle Kraken over the weekend, a strong performance that included a shutout from much maligned Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner.
Skinner stopped all 26 of the shots that were fired off in his direction during the course of that game for a shutout against the Kraken, a shutout that many believed would quiet down the talk of a potential goaltender trade from the Oilers. That however will not be the case.
On Monday, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman made it very clear that the Oilers are still actively searching for an upgrade in goal. There are a few caveats here, but the general message was that the Oilers haven't been swayed by a single game.
"I had some people who said to me 'Do not be surprised if Edmonton does not make any decisions, in goal or major decisions, until the end of the year' and I had some teams that said to me they don't believe that is true," revealed Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast.
So what is the truth of the situation? Well according to the insider's sources it sounds like the Oilers are absolutely willing to pull the trigger at a moment's notice should the right offer become available.
"They think that Edmonton will continue to look and if something they like comes they will do it," said Friedman. "They won't just punt on the season and say 'We can't do this now.'"
That of course raises the question of what is the right offer? Well according to Friedman the move has to be a noticeable upgrade, no lateral moves, due to the Oilers limited trade assets.
"They are not gonna trade Skinner for a guy who they feel has the same questions as Skinner," said Friedman. "They don't believe with their limited assets that that makes any sense and they won't do it."
