The timing says everything.
The Winnipeg Jets have spent weeks dancing around the biggest question of their offseason: what happens with Connor Hellebuyck? On July 1, the answer started to come into sharper focus.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Jets signed goaltender Stuart Skinner to a two-year deal worth $3.75 million per season. The move immediately raised eyebrows across the hockey world, as it strongly suggests Winnipeg is preparing for life without the reigning league MVP between the pipes.
Hellebuyck's future in Winnipeg has been the subject of intense speculation since locker clean-out day back in April, when he told reporters that "what we did this year was unacceptable." That comment, paired with weeks of trade rumors, painted a picture of a franchise goaltender who may have played his last game in a Jets uniform.
GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has reportedly been fielding interest from multiple clubs, with the Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres among those believed to be in the mix. A deal did not materialize on draft night, but the opening of free agency appears to have set the next phase of the process in motion.
Skinner, who spent time with the Pittsburgh Penguins, was one of the more notable unrestricted free agents available at the position. He had been linked to several teams in the days leading up to July 1, including the Ottawa Senators and Florida. Ultimately, it was Winnipeg that landed him.
The signing does not confirm that a Hellebuyck move is imminent. But bringing in a goaltender of Skinner's caliber on a multi-year contract is a clear signal that the Jets are building contingency plans, at minimum, for a crease without their franchise cornerstone.
For now, the Skinner signing stands as the clearest indication yet that the Hellebuyck chapter in Winnipeg is nearing its final page. What comes next for the Jets, and for their star goaltender, could define the franchise for years to come.
