Multiple sources confirm this may be the end of the road for Stuart Skinner in Edmonton.
For quite some time now there has been a growing sense of frustration within the Edmonton Oilers fan base when it comes to their team's goaltending situation. The fact of the matter is that goaltending in Edmonton over the past few seasons simply has not been good enough, with much of the blame for that falling into the lap of Oilers number one goaltender Stuart Skinner.
Many have come to believe that the Oilers will never be able to win it all as long as they don't make a significant improvement between the pipes, but in spite of that Skinner has remained the team's starting netminder... that is at least until now.
For the first time it is starting to sound like the Oilers may have finally run out of patience when it comes to Skinner, with the Oilers first game of the regular season no doubt playing a significant role in that sentiment.
Recently, Oilers insider Ryan Rishaug spoke with Bob Stauffer of Oilers Now and it was during their exchange that Rishaug revealed that the Oilers have no intention of moving forward with Skinner if things continue to look the way that they have over the past several seasons.
"What I would say to you Oiler fan that is worried, don’t worry," said Rishaug as per the Edmonton Journal. "If Stuart Skinner is not capable of handling this, he won’t be here. He will not be in net for game one of the playoffs. If he does not clearly show to the team this year that he’s going to do a better job of handling that than he has in the past."
Skinner is once again off to a terrible start this season with the now veteran goaltender recording a 2.77 goals against average and a .864 save percentage in his very first game of the season. Making matters worse however was the horrible blunder from Skinner late in that very same game, a blunder that most believe cost the Oilers a valuable point in the standings.
The Oilers lack of confidence in Skinner is already showing with the Oilers making the decision to acquire goaltender Connor Ingram from the Utah Mammoth, a move clearly designed to serve as an insurance policy in the event that Skinner falters again this season.
The Oilers opted to go with goaltender Calvin Pickard in their second game of the season and, like he has before, Pickard outshone Skinner with a 1.00 goals against average and a .933 save percentage in his first start of the season.
If you're wondering how Stauffer, a man employed directly by the Oilers, responded to Rishaug's comments, you might be surprised by the answer. Stauffer seemed to agree wholeheartedly with Rishaug's assessment that Skinner's time is finally running out.
"Absolutely," said Stauffer. "No question, I agree with you. He’s on the clock."
