The New York Rangers coaching search has got a lot of people talking, and sometimes, it’s not for great reasons. On Wednesday, it was announced that while most people assumed Peter Laviolette was leading the race for the vacant spot, John Hynes was being interviewed right after being fired by the Nashville Predators.
There has been a lot of reports on different candidates in the past and it got quite loud when the names of Joel Quenneville, Mike Babcock and Patrick Roy were thrown into the mix. However, when it comes to the latter, it appears that the Rangers never reached out to him.
According to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, the Rangers and general manager Chris Drury never contacted Roy for the position. For now… Brooks is adamant the Rangers need to get in touch with the Hall of Famer.
“The Post has learned on good authority, Drury has not spoken to Patrick Roy, who has coached his QMJHL champion Quebec Remparts to Sunday’s final of the Memorial Cup against either Kamloops, Peterborough or Seattle.”
While Brooks is able to admit that Roy might be a risk to take, he believes the former legendary goalie is what the Rangers needs at this time. Drury knows Roy well from his days playing in Colorado and could be waiting for the Memorial Cup final to contact Roy.
“The Memorial Cup ends Sunday. The Rangers should be interviewing Roy on Monday.”
Will Drury make the call?
