It was mentioned in recent weeks that the Colorado Avalanche had become a potential suitor for Vancouver Canucks’ Bo Horvat. It appears that the Avs aren’t the latest contender entering the sweepstakes.

While the topic surrounding a Horvat trade remains hot across the NHL, it got hotter over the weekend when Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman mentioned that the Seattle Kraken might get into the bidding to acquire the Canucks’ captain.

“Obviously there’s going to be a ton of interest… one team, guys, I’ve wondered about potentially getting into this is… the Seattle Kraken.”

The Kraken has been impressive lately and holds pieces it could use in return to entice Vancouver to make a deal for Horvat. It is believed the Canucks would look to upgrade at center or on defense rather than a return of future assets, but Seattle has interesting prospects and young players to offer up as trade bait. The Kraken also holds sufficient trade deadline cap room to take on Horvat’s prorated salary. The same cannot be said of the Avalanche, who would surely benefit from Horvat’s addition seeing the team keeps lacking an experienced second-line center since Nazem Kadri chose the Calgary Flames during free agency.

The Canucks would likely target young centers Matty Beniers and Shane Wright, but the Kraken would undoubtedly refuse : they won’t lose them for a short rental like Horvat, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

But a deal could be made if the Kraken present the right trade chips to get Horvat out of Vancouver. This chatter will only intensify as we get closer to the trade deadline, especially with no development reported on the contract extension front for Horvat to remain with the Canucks.

He could therefore be sporting a new uniform after March 3rd, and it could be the one of the Kraken.

Stay tuned…
