Jimmy Murphy of the Sick Podcast recently cited a league source saying Montreal never even reached out to Winnipeg about Hellebuyck. The source offered a colorful take on the situation, saying that while it takes two to tango, "Winnipeg hasn't even invited Montreal onto the dance floor."

Montreal's reported disinterest reportedly stems from a straightforward roster reality. The Canadiens already carry three goaltenders in Jakub Dobes, Jacob Fowler, and Samuel Montembeault. General manager Kent Hughes has reportedly made clear the team will not open the season with all three on the roster and has been actively trying to trade Montembeault before the campaign begins next week.
