Switzerland upsets Canada at IIHF World Championship.
A huge win on Saturday.
The National Hockey League is currently hosting the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs here in North America, but while that is going on the International Ice Hockey Federation is also hosting the 2022 Ice Hockey World Championship and that tournament has just featured a pretty significant upset.
On Saturday, Switzerland and Canada faced off in the group stage of the tournament with both teams currently in 'Group A' and, although Canada came into this game as the expected favorite, it would be Switzerland that would pull off an impressive upset win. Not only did they beat the Canadians on Saturday though, they did so by a commanding margin eventually winning the game 6 - 3 thanks to an empty net goal from Timo Meier.
This was anything but a walk in the park for Switzerland though, they rallied back from several deficits in the game and I suspect that will make the win all that much more satisfying for the men who pulled it off.
It would be Canada's Kent Johnson that would open up the scoring on Saturday.
Switzerland would quickly respond, although Logan Thompson might want this one back.
Adam Lowry would give the Canadians the lead right back, scoring on the breakaway while shorthanded.
Once again though Switzerland would answer right back.
Drake Batherson would score Canada's third goal of the period, and with only seconds left on the clock surely they would go into intermission with the lead?
Nope. Because as they had twice already during the period, Switzerland would not be deterred and once again had an answer.
From there it was all Switzerland, with Nico Hischier giving the Swiss their first lead of the game.
Pius Suter would give the Swiss a two goal lead before Meier would finish the game off with the empty netter.
As you might expect, the Swiss fans were loving it.
Both teams are very much still alive in this tournament, which could make for a very interesting rematch if these two teams clash in the medal round of the tournament.
