Forward Vladimir Tarasenko was taken off the free-agent market on Thursday night when he signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Ottawa Senators.

Last season, the Russian forward split his time between the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers, posting 18 goals and 32 assists in 69 games. He was acquired by the Rangers on Feb. 9.

Tarasenko, who is coming off an eight-year, $60-million deal he signed with St. Louis in 2015, became one of the most coveted free agents this summer and rumours quickly linked him to the Carolina Hurricanes in a monster deal.

However, it unraveled from there as Tarasenko received multiple offers of varying lengths from contenders to rebuilding clubs worth between $5.5 million to $6 million, with the Hurricanes being among them, but instead fired his agent, got new representatives, hoping to score an even bigger deal. But the tight cap didn’t help, and last night finally, the star forward got a one-year deal done.

Jeremy Rutherford however reports that Tarasenko turned down three other teams before signing on the dotted line in Ottawa.

“He had other offers, including Florida and San Jose and Carolina.”

On top of that, he reportedly turned down a longer offer from the Senators earlier in free agency.

It had been reported that Tarasenko was leaning towards a short one-year deal in order to set himself up for a major payday next summer, once he returns to free agency.

This might be exactly what takes place now in Ottawa for Tarasenko...
