Team Canada officially will have a first time captain at the upcoming World Championship of Hockey tournament.

On Sunday morning, Hockey Canada announced their leadership group for the tournament with a big surprise at the forefront of that group. Taking over as captain for the tournament will be none other than Canadian phenom Macklin Celebrini, no doubt earning that spot after his incredible season with the San Jose Sharks as well as his strong performance during the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan, Italy earlier this year.

It is a big burden for Celebrini to take on but it is a move that I believe will receive widespread support given that many Canadian fans view Celebrini as a cornerstone player for the country on the international stage, one that will likely be representing Canada for many years to come. That being said Celebrini will have plenty of experience on his leadership team to back him up with former Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares and former St. Louis Blues captain Ryan O'Reilly who will both serve as alternate captains under celebrini.

You can see a photo of all 3 men wearing their new letters just below:

Do you agree with the move to make Celebrini a captain seemingly so early into his NHL career? Is this the right choice for Canada when thinking about the long term future? Let me know all of your thoughts on today's major announcement in the comments.
