This gives the team so many more options for next month's Olympics.
In case you missed it on Tuesday evening, Los Angeles Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper was forced to leave his team's game against the New York Rangers with an apparent head injury.
Kuemper collided with Rangers forward Jonny Brodzinski and analysts wondered if heh suffered a leg or groin injury. What happened though is that Brodzinski's right knee hit Kuemper in the head, leading to speculation that he had suffered a concussion.
Here's the play in question:
Kuemper left the game and didn't return, but today he gave some clarity on the nature of his injury to reporters.
What actually happened, in Kuemper's words, was that the collision with Brodzinski caused a pinch nerve in his neck and his "arm went dead."
That's obviously a very concerning feeling, but today Kuemper told reporters that the feeling has fully returned and that he'll be just fine. No cause for alarm.
That's obviously great news for the Kings, but also for Team Canada. Kuemper, along with St. Louis Blues goalie Jordan Binnington and Washington Capitals goalie Logan Thompson comprise Canada's goaltending contingent for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics.
The odds are on Binnington taking over the starting role, but Kuemper has been a far superior goalie to Binnington this NHL season. Don't be surprised if Kuemper, or Thompson for that matter, takes over the reigns for the Maple Leaf in this tournament. Having a healthy, motivated Kuemper gives Canada a lot of flexibility, so this is a very important development.
