Canadian forward goes down just days away from the Olympics.
The Canadian Olympic squad may have just suffered a blow that could have an impact on their hopes at the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Milan, Italy.
On Saturday night the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins put on one hell of a show during the National Hockey League's Stadium Series event, but unfortunately for the Lightning it was a game that would come at a price. During the course of the game, Lightning forward Anthony Cirelli found himself on the receiving end of an open ice hit courtesy of Bruins forward Mark Kastelic.
The hit didn't look like the most forceful of blows, with there being relatively little impact between the two men, but it was immediately apparent that Cirelli was in bad shape. Cirelli was spun around on the play but I suspect what really caused the injury to occur here was the fact that Cirelli never saw Kastelic coming and was caught completely off guard by the hit.
Things only got worse once Cirelli made it back to the Lightning bench, with the forward doubled over in pain on the bench before eventually leaving the game entirely. Here is a look at the replay of both sequences:
The timing of this for the Lightning isn't the worst given the fact that they only have 2 games remaining on their schedule before the Olympic break. In fact it could be Team Canada that is most negatively impacted by this, with Cirelli looking like he was in serious pain only days away from the start of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
The comments from Cirelli's head coach, Jon Cooper, did not sound very promising.
"It was kind of a stinger," revealed Cooper. "Cirelli’s a tough kid. For him not to come back, clearly there’s something wrong with him. So hopefully he’ll be OK. There’s some big games coming up ahead for him."
No timeline yet for a potential return, stay tuned for more on this developing story.
