Preparations are already underway for the upcoming World Junior Championship tournament and on Monday we got some big news when it comes to things on the Canadian front.

Team Canada has announced the full list of players that it has invited to its World Junior training camp roster, with more names on this list than the Canadians can officially bring to the tournament. Alan Millar, who is currently serving as general manager for this roster, has stated that they will need to cut one goalie, one forward and one defenseman from the group before finalizing the roster.

Here you can take a look at the players who have been invited:

Forwards:

Michael Misa
Braeden Cootes
Gavin McKenna
Tij Iginla
Carter Bear
Jake O'Brien
Jett Luchanko
Cole Reschny
Porter Martone
Sam O'Reilly
Liam Greentree
Caleb Desnoyers
Cole Beaudoin
Brady Martin
Michael Hane

Defensemen:
Kashawn Aitcheson
Jackson Smith
Harrison Brunicke
Carson Carels
Cameron Reid
Ethan Mackenzie
Ben Danford
Zayne Parekh
Keaton Verhoeff

Goalies:
Jack Ivankovic
Carter George
Joshua Ravensbergen

I must admit I do question the strategy of bringing 1 extra player at each position, if only because the news will be devastating to the player that is left out at each position when the roster is finalized. It is important to remember that World Junior Championship rosters are rostered by very young men and being left off the roster could be heartbreaking for what is at the end of the day just a kid.

Of course you could argue that merely being invited to a camp of this nature is already a major accomplishment with names like Owen Protz, Marek Vanacker, and Sacha Boisvert not even receiving an invite.

What do you think of this roster selection? Did Team Canada get it right? Do you agree with the decision to bring on 1 extra player at each position? Let me know your thoughts on today's announcements in the comments.
