Gustavsson gets the hook after yesterday's scare against Italy.
It sounds like Team Sweden is making an early change in goal at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Minnesota Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson had a shaky showing yesterday in Sweden's tournament opening game against Italy. Gustavsson eventually earned the victory over Italy, but he struggled early in the game and gave up one of the worst goals we've seen in Olympic history.
Yikes... that's an ugly goal.
It also feels reminiscent of...
I'm sure the other old-timers out there will know what I'm talking about...
In any case, earlier today NHL insider Mollie Walker reported that Sweden will turn to New Jersey Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom in Gustavsson's position for tomorrow's game against rival Finland.
From Walker:
Hmmm...
It'll be interesting to see what sort of leash they give Markstrom, because clearly they had Gustavsson on a short leash. Markstrom has been objectively bad this season, while Gustavsson has been outstanding. Incidentally, Gustavsson's Minnesota teammate Jesper Wallstedt is Sweden's third option and he could be the best of the entire bunch.
It'll be interesting to see how things play out in goal for Sweden over the course of this tournament. If nothing else, the starting job is available to any of these three gentlemen.
Who will step up?
Is Henrik Lundqvist still available?
