A tragic incident at the Centre Georges‑Vézina is raising serious questions about how medical emergencies in the stands are handled during live games.

During last week’s matchup between the Chicoutimi Saguenéens and the Gatineau Olympiques, a longtime season ticket holder collapsed in the arena. According to reports from TVA Sports, the medical emergency occurred around 8 p.m. early in the second period in Section 5, near an aisle between rows three and five. While first responders rushed to help and CPR was performed in the stands, the game continued.

That detail has shocked many who were present. The location of the collapse meant the emergency was highly visible to nearby fans, some of whom watched as responders attempted to revive the supporter while play remained live on the ice.

At one point during the emergency, a goal was even scored. Witnesses say many fans nearby didn’t react, focused instead on the life-saving efforts unfolding only a few rows away.

The Saguenéens later released a statement confirming the tragic outcome and offering condolences to the family. The team noted the supporter had been part of the “Sags family” for more than 20 years.

Reports have also raised concerns about arena preparedness, noting the building allegedly has only a single defibrillator located far from the seating area.

Now, many are asking whether the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League needs clearer protocols for such situations. Critics argue that when a life-threatening emergency occurs in the crowd, the response should be immediate: whistle blown, play stopped, players sent to the bench, and the focus shifted to the medical situation.

Will this tragedy lead to meaningful change?
