An incredible gesture from Team USA players after their first World Championship win in 92 years!
It was an incredible day for the American players at the International Ice Hockey Federation's World Championship of Hockey, with Team USA claiming the championship for their own for the first time in nearly a century.
The Americans ended what was a stunning 92 year drought at the tournament on Saturday, defeating Switzerland in a nail biter. The score was still all tied up at 0-0 in regulation but it would be Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson who would prove to be the hero in this one, finding the back of the net and breaking the curse for Team USA at this tournament.
Now you could forgive everyone involved on the American side of this equation for being swept up in such a monumental moment, but instead of getting carried away with their win the players on Team USA did something incredible. Led by Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski, the American players would drape a #13 jersey across the trophy before hoisting it to celebrate their victory.
The jersey was of course meant to be a tribute to Johnny Gaudreau who tragically passed away last year when both he and his brother were struck and killed by a drunk driver while riding their bikes home. The players held up the jersey even after the trophy was presented, going well out of their way to make sure that Gaudreau was honored and included in their special moment.
A truly beautiful tribute and one that shows what the sport of hockey is really all about.
