Team USA players quietly criticize Donald Trump on social media

They politely declined Trump's invite yesterday, but things behind the scenes are a bit different.

Team USA's gold medal winning women's hockey team declined an invitation from American President Donald Trump to attend today's State of the Union address yesterday, stating essentially that they are honored by the invitation but have other commitments that cannot be broken.

"We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal–winning U.S. Women’s Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement," a USA Hockey spokesperson said. "Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate."

Incidentally, leaked video from Team USA's men's team showed President Trump poking a bit of fun at the women's team when he extended the same invitation to the men. Trump joked that he'd have to invite the women's team because if he didn't invite them, "he'd probably be impeached."

Today, social media users have noticed that several members of Team USA's women's team have been 'Liking' certain posts on Instagram that have been critical of Trump and supporters who found his joke to be in poor taste.

In particular, Laila Edwards, Gwyneth Philips, Emma Greco, Hayley Scamurra and Taylor Heise have all shown support of posts that state:

"You can tell how smart people are by what they laugh at."

They have also 'Liked' posts from other publications that have praised them for turning down Trump's offer.

Is it safe to say here that the women politely declined their invite but never really wanted to accept in the first place?
