Yet another shot block results in an injury.
The Detroit Red Wings have already lost gritty goal scoring forward Tyler Bertuzzi twice this season due to his having broken both hands on separate occasions while blocking a shot. Additionally, Filip Zadina has been on the shelf for the past several weeks after suffering a lower body injury while blocking an opponent's shot.
And now, captain Dylan Larkin is joining the list of Detroit's walking wounded, suffering an injury last night after he - you guessed it - blocked a shot. He left Tuesday evening's game against the Carolina Hurricanes, a 1-0 Red Wings loss, and did not return. Immediately afterward, head coach Derek Lalonde explained Larkin was not going to be available to play in tonight's game at XCel Energy Center against the Minnesota Wild.
And now, more light has been shed on Larkin's condition. According to Lalonde, Larkin is seeing a specialist to determine the best course of action.
Larkin "saw a specialist, but we don't know anything today," Lalonde said. "It was just [a matter of seeing] the right specials. The doctor from last night moved him onto a specialist, so we'll go from there."
"I think it's just unlucky," Lalonde continued. "That's literally a wrist shot from the point. Bertuzzi went down on the offensive side of an errant shot. Zadina, he turned during the block. I just think it's a little unlucky. But, we ask our guys to get in front of pucks and, unfortunately, that's what happens."
However, Lalonde wasn't able to give a clear time window as to how long Detroit's captain could potentially miss. The good news is that it didn't sound like he was shutting the door on Larkin suiting up this Saturday night against the Ottawa Senators.
I honestly don't know," Lalonde said of Larkin potentially playing Sunday. "I think it's a good sign he played the entire second period, until he got the X-ray. That obviously showed something."
With 10 goals and 17 assists, Larkin leads the Red Wings in points. Needless to say, it would be devastating to Detroit's offense if they were to lose him for an extended period of time, especially with other top players already out.
