Terrible update released on Matt Luff

What awful luck he has.

Detroit Red Wings forward Matt Luff just can't catch a break. It wasn't long ago that he took a puck to the mouth, requiring several stitches and the use of an old-school helmet cage. And as (bad) luck would have it, last night was his first game without the helmet cage - and he was boarded from behind in what was a completely dangerous hit from Montreal Canadiens forward Juraj Slafkovsky.

And unfortunately, the news is anything but good for Luff. According to head coach Derek Lalonde, Luff is set to have surgery soon and will be out of action for at least the next 10-12 weeks.

Luff is just the latest long-term injury for the Red Wings, who have been without several players this season thanks to various ailments including Tyler Bertuzzi, Oskar Sundqvist, Robby Fabbri, Jake Walman, and Filip Zadina. Meanwhile, Jakub Vrana remains in the NHLPA Player Assistance program.
