Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Thursday night that Calgary Flames assistant coach Ryan Huska is the leading contender to be named head coach of the team. On Friday, Kevin Weekes confirmed that the Flames will be naming Huska as their new bench boss and that the press conference will be held Monday in Calgary.
Huska has been an assistant with the Flames the past five years. He previously was head coach of the Flames’ AHL affiliate for four years as well as head coach of the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets, leading the latter team to the Memorial Cup final in 2009.
There were other candidates looked at by Flames new GM Craig Conroy for the vacant spot, including Calgary Wranglers AHL head coach Mitch Love, Flames assistant Kirk Muller, former Vancouver Canucks coach Travis Green and former Florida Panthers coach Andrew Brunette.
But the Flames are tuning to Faska, who will replace head coach Darryl Sutter who was fired after the team missed the playoffs this season.
