This story is legend in bars and clubs around St. Louis.
In case you missed the news earlier today, legendary rocker Ozzy Osbourne has passed away at 76 years old.
His family made the announcement via Ozzy's personal social media accounts.
Osbourne had been suffering from Parkinson's disease and played his final performance earlier this month at the massive 'Back to the Beginning' concert in his hometown of Birmingham, UK. Ozzy and fellow Black Sabbath founding members Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward reunited for the first time since 2005 and performed as a band for the final time in history. The world's first heavy metal band and arguably one of the most influential bands in rock history is officially no more.
Fans across the world are coming together to share Ozzy stories today, so I felt compelled to share the story behind Ozzy's iconic St. Louis Blues mugshot.
The mugshot features a stunned looking Osbourne sporting a Blues t-shirt while being booked by Shelby County police in Memphis, TN.
Check it out:
The photo has become famous in the hockey world, with the Blues sort of adopting Ozzy as a bit of a mascot. In fact, Ozzy even donned a Blues tarp again in 2019 in celebration of the team's Stanley Cup championship.
So... what gives?
What's the story behind the original blues t-shirt?
On May 3rd, 1984 Osbourne played St. Louis in the middle of his "Bark at the Moon" tour. At some point that day he must have picked up or been gifted a Blues shirt. By all indications, he had no idea who the team was or what the sport of hockey even was. But, he's Ozzy... chances are he didn't even know what planet he was on at the moment.
Days later Osbourne was arrested in Memphis, TN on public intoxication charges while wearing the shirt, leading to the iconic mug-shot.
He may not have given a damn about hockey or the Blues... but he gets a pass and is included in our fandom because... well... because he's Ozzy!!! Long live the Prince of Darkness!
