The insane story of a 48 year old Chelios’ night of partying before game day

You may not like Chris Chelios, but this story will make you realize how much of a beast he was, playing 27 seasons in the National Hockey League. The guy collected 948 points and, most importantly to his record 2891 penalty minutes in 1651 minutes, but that seems less impressive than this insane story.

According one of his former teammates Boris Valabik, who played with Chelios during his last season in the NHL as a member of the Atlanta Thrashers, the famous defenseman was a party machine.

Valabik revealed that “after a night of partying, Chelios would go straight to the arena at like 3 a.m. He’d take a nap, take a stationary bike to sauna, sweat it all out and then be first at morning practice and 100% ready for evening game.”

That’s insane! Especially when you do the math and realize that Chelios was 48 years old when he played for the Thrashers. The blue liner played just seven games that season after signing a two-year contract in Atlanta. Chelios remained with the Wolves until he was recalled to the Thrashers, hoping he could provide a needed spark for the team to clinch a playoff spot. He failed to record a point, was sent back to the Wolves and later retired.

Could he have blamed the partying? Who knows? He might have worked for years when he played for the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks or Detroit Red Wings but it seems like his body had had enough in 2010 after a run with the Thrashers.

Still, what a party animal!
