THIS JUST IN: a terrible blow in Winnipeg.
It has just been confirmed by the Winnipeg Jets that goalie Connor Hellebuyck is officially getting shut down by the team in order for him undergo a minor Arthroscopic knee procedure. It is anticipated Hellebuyck will be out 4 to 6 weeks, per Darren Dreger.
Dreger added that “Hellebuyck has been dealing with this issue for a while. The star goalie and team believe it’s best it is taken care of now as opposed to having it linger.”
Hellebuyck has recorded a .913 save percentage and a 2.51 goals against average in 14 games this season. He claimed back-to-back Vezina trophies and is the reigning Hart Trophy winner.
The Jets have therefore been forced to recall goalie prospect Thomas Milic from the Manitoba Moose (AHL).
Milic is expected to form a tandem with Eric Comrie until the star American is ready to return to game action.
A timeline of four-to-six weeks would put Hellebuyck’s return to play right around late December, meaning this issue is not likely to endanger his availability for the Winter Olympics in February in Italy.
For Winnipeg, the injury is a tough blow for a team that has gotten off to a 12-7-0 start to the season. The Jets host the Carolina Hurricanes later tonight and then the Minnesota Wild on Sunday before heading off for a three-game road trip.
