Concern continues to grow around the Golden Knights star forward.
The news surrounding William Karlsson does not appear to be getting any better for the Vegas Golden Knights.
Speaking to reporters Friday morning, head coach John Tortorella declined to provide a detailed medical update on Karlsson’s condition. However, his comments strongly suggested the veteran center is unlikely to return during the remainder of the Stanley Cup Final.
“He’s an important piece to us: up the middle of the ice, a penalty-killer, power-play guy. He’s a winner,” Tortorella said. “But having said that, it’s all good stuff. He’s not going to be with us, probably. We’ve got to find a way to fill that void, not with just one guy but as a team.”
Karlsson suffered the injury during Game 5 after taking a hit from Hurricanes defenseman Sean Walker. He immediately headed to the dressing room, was later seen favoring his arm, and eventually left the arena for further evaluation at a local hospital.
Since then, there has been little optimism regarding a potential return.
The timing could not be worse for Vegas.
Karlsson only recently returned to the lineup after missing the previous six months with an undisclosed injury. Since making his playoff debut at the beginning of the second round, he quickly re-established himself as one of the Golden Knights’ most important forwards, recording nine points in 14 playoff games.
His return also helped reshape Vegas’ lineup, allowing Mitch Marner to move to the wing while giving the club valuable depth down the middle.
Now, with the Golden Knights facing elimination in Game 6, Karlsson appears increasingly unlikely to return. And as Tortorella acknowledged, replacing a player of his importance simply isn’t something one player can do alone.
