Kirill Marchenko’s time with the Columbus Blue Jackets is officially coming to an end, and the talented Russian winger is headed to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a blockbuster trade that will see Matthew Knies go the other way.

The full details of the deal have not yet been disclosed, but multiple reports have confirmed that Knies is part of the return heading to Columbus. Marchenko will also sign a contract extension with the Maple Leafs as part of the transaction, giving Toronto a long-term commitment to one of the NHL’s emerging offensive wingers.

It is a massive development for both franchises and brings an end to what had become a fascinating situation surrounding Marchenko in Columbus. The 26-year-old had been the subject of trade speculation throughout the offseason, with several teams reportedly checking in on his availability. Elliotte Friedman had previously identified Toronto among the clubs interested in the winger, and on Monday the two sides finally appeared to reach the finish line.

Marchenko’s NHL career has been impressive since he arrived in North America. Columbus selected him 49th overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, but the Russian forward remained overseas for several seasons before making his NHL debut during the 2022-23 campaign.

He wasted little time showing his scoring ability, recording 21 goals and 25 points in 59 games as a rookie. Marchenko followed that up with 23 goals and 42 points in his second NHL season before taking another significant step forward in 2024-25.

That season saw Marchenko explode for 31 goals and 74 points in 79 games, firmly establishing himself as one of Columbus' most dangerous offensive weapons. He followed it up with another productive 2025-26 campaign, scoring 27 goals and adding 40 assists for 67 points in 76 games. He has now scored at least 21 goals in each of his four NHL seasons.

Now, Toronto is betting that the best of Marchenko is still ahead of him.

The Maple Leafs have been searching for additional offensive firepower, and Marchenko brings size, finishing ability and proven NHL production to their forward group. His ability to score from the wing should give Toronto another legitimate offensive option alongside its established stars.

For Columbus, meanwhile, losing Marchenko is a significant move. The Blue Jackets are receiving Knies, a 23-year-old power forward who has already established himself as an important NHL player. Knies posted a career-high 66 points in 79 games last season and is signed through 2030-31 at an average annual value of $7.75 million.

That contract certainty could be particularly important for Columbus as the organization continues building around its young core. While the Blue Jackets are losing a proven goal scorer in Marchenko, they are getting a younger player with considerable NHL experience and multiple seasons of team control.

For Toronto, however, the story is clearly about Marchenko.

The Leafs aren't simply acquiring him as a rental. The fact that an extension is expected to accompany the trade signals that the organization views him as a long-term piece of its roster.

And that makes this much more than a simple swap of two young forwards.
