On Wednesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs finally took a decision when it came to veteran goalie Matt Murray, placing him on Injured Reserve/Long Term Injury prior to the start of the season. He is out indefinitely, though the Maple Leafs did not provide details on the injury.
Murray still has a year left to the contract he signed with the Ottawa Senators back in 2020. Ottawa retained some of his salary when they moved him to Toronto last summer, giving him a $4,687,500 cap hit with the Maple Leafs.
He played 26 games for the Maple Leafs last season, putting up a 14-8-2 record and a .903 save percentage. Murray dealt with several different injuries over the campaign, though he did manage to serve as backup in the team's second-round playoff series against the Florida Panthers.
As Toronto looks to free up cap space after Ilya Samsonov was awarded a one-year, $3.55 million deal in arbitration, it was believed that Murray would be a buyout candidate for the Maple Leafs.
He however lands on the LTIR.
