Montreal swaps a defenseman for a feisty winger in a classic change-of-scenery deal between two NHL clubs.
The Montreal Canadiens have made a roster move, finalizing a trade with the New York Rangers in what amounts to a classic change-of-scenery swap. According to NHL insiders Peter Baugh and Pierre LeBrun, the Habs are sending defenseman William Trudeau to New York in exchange for left winger Brett Berard. Both players have been trying to establish themselves as full-time NHL regulars, and this deal gives each of them a fresh opportunity to do exactly that.
Berard is a smaller forward who hails from Providence, Rhode Island, standing at 5-foot-9 and weighing in at 175 pounds. He shoots left and was originally picked by the Rangers in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft, 134th overall. While he may not have the imposing physical frame that some teams covet, he has consistently shown he can produce offensively at the minor league level.
His college career at Providence College was impressive, highlighted by a standout 2021-2022 campaign in which he racked up 38 points across 36 games. That production carried over into his first full professional season in 2023-2024 with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL, where he posted 25 goals and 48 points in 71 games. Those numbers caught the attention of the Rangers, who gave him a more extended look at the NHL level during the 2024-2025 season.
In that campaign, Berard appeared in 35 games with New York, scoring six goals and tallying 10 points. However, the most recent 2025-2026 season proved to be a tougher road. He suited up for just 13 NHL games with the Rangers without registering a single point and spent the bulk of the year back in Hartford, where he put up 22 points in 41 contests. His overall NHL career numbers now stand at 10 points in 48 games, a modest total that suggests he still has plenty to prove at the highest level.
By parting ways with William Trudeau, general manager Kent Hughes is betting on adding some offensive depth and energy to the organization's forward group. Berard's most likely landing spot to start would be with the Laval Rocket, Montreal's AHL affiliate, though he would certainly be in the conversation for a call-up if he performs well.
The winger has already demonstrated that he can be a productive player in the American Hockey League, and his speed and tenacity could make him an intriguing depth option for the Canadiens down the line. That said, the onus will be squarely on Berard to show up at training camp and prove he can bring the consistency required to earn a permanent roster spot in Montreal.
This is the type of low-risk, potentially rewarding transaction that NHL teams frequently make during the offseason. Neither player had been able to fully cement their place in the league, so both get a new environment and a clean slate. For the Canadiens, it is a minor but calculated adjustment as the organization continues to build toward its long-term goals. Fans will get their first look at what Berard can bring to the table when training camp opens later this year.
