The NHL has reportedly axed the annual awards show
Tough news for Hollywood's C-List celebrities...
According to Sportsnet NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the NHL is killing off its annual Awards Show ceremony.
Finally... my prayers have been answered!
The NHL's annual award ceremony is, at best, a tedious affair and, at worst, a full-blown disaster. The league has tried over and over again to make their awards show a fun, comedy filled variety show but it hasn't really ever hit the mark.
“The word is this year that there will not be an award show per se,” Friedman reported this past weekend. “What the league is looking at, in combination with the Players' Association, is what else can they do that’s interest, what else can they do to make the awards special?”
Friedman reports that the NHL is considering following the NBA's lead on how they hand out awards. Essentially, award winners will be presented with the trophy on the ice ahead of their team's final regular season home game.
“There’ll be a press conference earlier in the day, and then at the beginning of the game, the trophy will be brought out, and the player can celebrate and get a big ovation from the fans,” explained Friedman.
“One of the other things they’re talking about is can they create viral moments. Like maybe surprising the player somewhere with the trophy.”
Fine by me.
Honestly, the appeal of the NHL Awards Show has been gone for decades at this point. Literally any change to the format should be welcomed with open arms.
