The wait for the 2026-27 NHL season just got a whole lot more real. The league officially unveiled its opening night slate and home openers for all 32 teams on Wednesday, but the biggest revelation extends well beyond a single night of hockey.

The upcoming regular season will expand to 84 games per team, up from the traditional 82. The two additional contests will come in the form of extra divisional matchups, increasing the intensity of rivalries across the league.

The season is set to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 29, headlined by a triple-header on ESPN that opens with a blockbuster in Raleigh. The defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes will host the Florida Panthers at 5 p.m. ET, raising their championship banner in front of the team that claimed the Cup in both 2024 and 2025.

The ESPN broadcast continues with the Boston Bruins welcoming the New York Rangers at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights hosting the Chicago Blackhawks at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Canadian fans will have plenty to watch that night as well. Sportsnet's doubleheader kicks off with the Toronto Maple Leafs hosting the Montreal Canadiens at 7 p.m. ET. That game could reportedly mark the NHL debut of Gavin McKenna, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2026 NHL Draft.

The nightcap north of the border features the Edmonton Oilers, now coached by Mike Babcock, taking on the Vancouver Canucks and their new bench boss Manny Malhotra at 10 p.m. ET.

TNT is expected to follow up opening night with its own doubleheader on Sept. 30, reportedly featuring Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The expansion to 84 games is a notable shift for the league, adding volume to divisional play and potentially reshaping how teams manage their rosters across a longer grind. It also raises questions about player workload and the impact on the playoff race, where every divisional point matters even more.

The full schedule is set to be unveiled on Thursday, which should provide a clearer picture of how the extra games are distributed throughout the calendar.

But as you can see, the opening night lineup alone signals that the NHL is swinging for the fences with marquee matchups, championship drama, and the debut of the league's most hyped prospect in years.
