The Oilers almost traded for new goalie and you have to wonder if they’d be in the Cup Final with him…
Rumours have surfaced on how Edmonton almost acquired a new goalie during the season, and how it could have changed the entire playoff picture. More below:
The regular season was not easy on goalies Stuart Skinner or Calvin Pickard in Edmonton. The same can be said of Jeremy Swayman as he struggled in the Boston Bruins’ net, but it did not prevent of the NHL’s best teams from being interested in acquiring him ahead of the March 7 trade deadline. According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, the Oilers “inquired” about Swayman during this season when looking at an upgrade in between their pipes.
“Edmonton inquired about Jeremy Swayman this season, well after he signed his deal with Boston, but with how much Stuart Skinner gets criticized, Stu seems to be doing fine in net for the Oilers” Pagnotta reported.
While it is not surprising to hear that the Oilers were looking at Swayman as a potential trade target ahead of March 7, the playoff picture could be entirely different at this time. Edmonton is heading into Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final tonight, but if they looked into Swayman earlier in the season, that’s because Skinner was quite shaky. He had a .896 save percentage and a 2.81 goals-against average, but is now one of the main reasons the Oilers have moved on to face the Florida Panthers for the second consecutive year in the Final. He has a 6-4 record, a 2.53 goals-against average, a .906 save percentage, and three shutouts.
I bet the Oilers are grateful they held on to Skinner seeing that while Swayman had a brillant previous campaign, he struggled in 2024-25 with a 22-29-7 record, a 3.11 goals-against average, a .892 save percentage, and four shutouts.
However, it was a bad year all around for the Bruins and who knows, the Oilers could have a second look at Swayman if they choose to upgrade their goaltending situation this summer.
