The Oilers on the verge on making a trade they'll regret?

Several players injured, an unexpected record after 23 games this season and a heartbreaking loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs : nothing is going right for the Edmonton Oilers. But what if things were about to get... worse?

During a Friday morning radio hit on Calgary’s Sportsnet 960,NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman tried to shed some light on what might be going on in Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli's head.

“I think Edmonton is sort of on the fringes right now of their roster with what they’re looking to do,” explained Friedman.  "I think guys like Jujhar Khaira, Anton Slepyshev, some of the depth players on their roster are guys that they would move, whether for a goalie or something else."

Friedman also addressed the ongoing speculation that top forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins could be on the move. Jimmy Murphy revealed last night that the Boston Bruins have been asking about the young forward.

I know Nugent-Hopkins’ name is out there. I’m not convinced that Peter Chiarelli wants to do it. I think also that if he does do it, I think the price is going to be extremely high. I just think he’d like to do something. He doesn’t want to do anything he’s going to regret. I think that’s a sign that he hasn’t made a trade already that he’s being very careful.

“I think what they’re looking at is sort of the depth players on their roster, and he’s willing to make moves like that."

The Oilers are mostly looking to improve their back end, and the need might become more urgent now that Adam Larsson is out with an upper-body injury. However, Chiareilli cannot afford to make another bad trade.

“I do think he’s in on Ian Cole, but I think the price is high from Pittsburgh and I’m not sure he wants to pay that.”

The bad luck in Edmonton must come to an end, and therefore Chiarelli needs to be very careful not to make a trade he will end up regretting .
